Your Darby Electrician Is Right Next Door
Darby borders Collingdale, so when you call A.V. Electric you're calling the electrician down the road. We're a locally owned, family owned company, and Darby is the kind of town we're comfortable in: old streets, solid brick rowhomes, and wiring that has been asked to do more every decade since the house went up.
Anthony "Woody" Wood has 16 years of electrical experience in Delaware County. Call and Woody calls you back in about 5 minutes during open hours. He looks at the problem, gives you a straight price, and never charges a trip fee for the estimate. The same guy who quotes the job is the guy who does the work. A.V. Electric partners with a licensed Electrical Contractor, so permits get pulled and the job passes inspection. We're open 8am to 5pm, seven days a week.
Whether you own your home on Main Street, rent out a duplex off Ridge Avenue, or just moved into a rowhome and found out the basement panel is older than you are, we're happy to take a look. If you want to see everywhere we work, our Delaware County service areas page has the full list.
Our Services
Electrical Services for Darby Homes
Calls from Darby tend to be practical. A panel that trips, a room with no working outlets, a rental that needs to pass inspection, a basement that took on water. Here's what we do, and each card goes to the full page if you want the details.
Generator Installation
When PECO goes down in a summer storm or a nor'easter, a standby generator keeps your heat, fridge, and lights running on their own. Sizing, fuel lines, the transfer switch, and permits all have to be handled right, and that's exactly what we do. Anthony walks you through the options that fit your home and budget before any work starts. Most installs finish in a day or two, with a free estimate up front.

Electric Panel Upgrade
Many homes around Collingdale still run on 60 to 100 amp panels or old fuse boxes that were never built for today's appliances, AC, and EV chargers. Warm breakers, flickering lights, and constant trips are signs your panel is maxed out. We replace old panels with modern 200 amp service, done to code with permits pulled. Most panel swaps take one day, and your power is back on that evening.

House Rewiring
A lot of Delco's pre-1930s rowhomes still have knob and tube or aluminum wiring behind the walls. Insurance companies flag it, and it's a real fire risk. Anthony has rewired these exact homes for 16 years and knows how to do it with as little wall damage as possible, room by room if needed. Start with a free wiring inspection so you know what you have and what it costs to fix.

General Electrician Services
Not every job is a big project. Dead outlets, crackling switches, ceiling fans, new light fixtures, and outdoor lighting are the everyday calls that keep a house working, and plenty of electricians won't bother with them. We treat the small stuff with the same care as a panel swap: a call back in about 5 minutes, no trip fee, and the price approved before work starts. Most jobs are done in one visit, because the truck already carries the parts.
Learn moreElectric vehicle charging station contractor
Charging your EV from a regular outlet is slow, and many Delco panels can't handle a charger without an upgrade. A.V. Electric installs Level 2 chargers for Tesla and every other EV brand, plus the dedicated circuit to power them safely. One visit covers the estimate, the panel check, and the plan, whether you're in Collingdale or King of Prussia.
Learn moreSecurity system installation service
Package theft and break-ins are real worries on Delco's tight rowhome blocks. A.V. Electric installs video doorbells, wired and wireless cameras, and full NVR systems so you can watch your porch, your car, and your back alley from your phone. Clean installs with hidden wiring, set up and working before we leave.
Learn moreWhat's Behind the Walls in Darby Homes
Darby packs a lot of homes into less than a square mile. The borough covers about 0.84 square miles and had 10,715 residents at the 2020 census, which works out to about 12,700 people per square mile. According to Census survey data, the median home in Darby was built in 1949. About 30 percent of the housing dates to 1939 or earlier, roughly 23 percent to the 1940s, and about 28 percent to the 1950s. Add it up and about four out of five Darby homes were built before 1960.
The style of housing is even more telling. Around 64 percent of homes are attached, meaning rowhomes, twins, and townhouses, while only about 12 percent are detached. Another 17 percent or so sit in buildings with two to four units. And the split between owners and renters is almost exactly even, about half and half.
That mix matters. A rowhome shares walls with its neighbors, so the basement panel sits in a tight spot and every upgrade has to be planned around it. A duplex or small multi unit building may have more than one meter and wiring that was patched over decades as units were split up. Owner occupied or rented, the question is the same: what was done to this house in the 70 or 80 years since it was built, and who did it?
Darby's history is older than the housing, too. Quaker families settled the area in 1682, and Darby became a borough in 1853. It was the birthplace of comedian W.C. Fields in 1880. Some blocks have homes from the 1800s sitting next to mid century rowhomes, and we see all of it.
Common Electrical Problems in Darby Homes
A quick note on how we put this together. Nobody keeps a list of electrical problems by borough, so this is based on the age and style of Darby's housing and on 16 years of working in Delco homes. Your house may have some of these, all of them, or none. These are the things we'd check first.
Undersized panels and old service
Homes built in the 1940s and 1950s were often wired for 60 or 100 amps. That was plenty when the biggest load was a refrigerator and a radio. Today a single kitchen can pull more than that. If your breakers trip every week, lights flicker when the AC starts, or the panel door feels warm, an electric panel upgrade is the real fix. In a tight rowhome basement we plan the work carefully, and a standard electric panel replacement is usually done in a single day.
Fuse boxes, and breakers that don't trip
Screw in fuses are still out there in Darby. If that's what you have, a fuse box replacement brings the house up to modern standards. If your panel has breakers but the brand is Federal Pacific or Zinsco, those are known for failing to trip when they should. Not every old panel needs to go, though. If a single breaker is the problem, circuit breaker replacement is the cheaper, honest answer and Woody will tell you so.
Ungrounded wiring and tired outlets
With nearly a third of Darby homes dating to 1939 or earlier, two prong outlets and cloth wrapped wire aren't unusual, and knob and tube wiring turns up in the oldest houses. Those homes need house rewiring, done room by room if that keeps the mess down. For the smaller stuff, outlet and switch repair gets dead outlets and crackling switches sorted, and our general electrician services cover fixtures, ceiling fans, and outdoor lighting.
Multi unit buildings and add on panels
In a duplex or small apartment building, a subpanel can solve the problem of too many loads on one service. Our electric subpanel installation adds capacity where it's needed, and if a panel was never installed correctly in the first place, electric panel installation gets it done right.
Basements that flood
This one is specific to Darby. The borough sits low along Darby Creek, which the Philadelphia Inquirer once described as one of the most flood prone streams in the country. After Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the government bought 37 homes on Chestnut Street, and in December 2023 heavy rain pushed the creek over again and forced evacuations in Collingdale and Darby. If water ever reached your panel, outlets, or anything plugged in down there, don't flip anything back on. Call us and we'll make sure it's safe first.
What a Panel Upgrade Looks Like in a Darby Rowhome
Panel upgrades are one of the most common jobs in a borough like Darby, where nearly two thirds of the homes are attached. Here's what to expect. You call and Woody calls you back in about 5 minutes. He comes out for a free estimate, looks at the service, the panel, and the wiring behind it, and gives you a price. You approve it before anything starts.
In a Darby rowhome the panel is usually in a tight basement, sometimes behind a finished wall or squeezed next to a water heater. That's why Woody looks first and plans the run before the day of the job. If your basement has taken on water in the past, it's worth talking about where the new panel should sit. On the day of the work, the old panel comes out and a modern 200 amp panel goes in. The permit is pulled and the work is inspected, and most swaps are done in a single day with the power back that evening.
If you own a rental, ask about scheduling the work between tenants. Fewer surprises for them, and fewer phone calls for you.
Permits, Rental Inspections, and Selling in Darby
Darby has its own Department of Code Enforcement, and the borough publishes an electrical permit application along with forms for contractor registration, certificates of occupancy, rental inspections, and resale inspections. In plain English, electrical work in Darby generally needs a permit and an inspection, and the borough also looks at homes when they're rented or sold.
A.V. Electric partners with a licensed Electrical Contractor and pulls permits on every job. That means your work is done to code, permitted, and passes inspection, which protects your home and your insurance.
If you own a rental, old panels, ungrounded outlets, and missing GFCI protection are the kinds of things inspectors tend to look for. Fixing them ahead of time is far easier than rescheduling an inspection. If you're selling, the same logic applies: a free estimate before you list gives you a price and a plan instead of a surprise. And if you're buying a Darby home and the inspection report has a long electrical list, bring it to us. We'll tell you which items matter and which don't.
Making an Older Darby House Work Like a New One
Plenty of Darby homes were built before anyone thought about plugging in a car or running a security camera, but they can handle those things with the right upgrades.
If you drive an electric car, a home charger needs its own circuit and a panel with room to spare. Our EV charger installation service takes care of the circuit and the permit, and the EV charging station installation page explains how it works.
When a storm knocks out PECO, a standby generator keeps your heat and fridge running. See our generator installation page for the details, and if you already own a generator that won't start, generator repair is a call away.
And if you want eyes on your porch or alley, we install home security cameras with clean wiring. The full list is under security system installation.
About Darby, PA
Darby goes back to 1682, when Quaker families settled here. The Darby Friends Meeting House on Main Street has stood since 1805, next to a burial ground that opened in 1682. The Darby Free Library, organized in 1743, is one of the oldest libraries in the country, and John Bartram, the famous colonial botanist, is buried in Darby.
Today Main Street and Ridge Avenue are the borough's local arteries, and MacDade Boulevard carries U.S. Route 13 through town. SEPTA trolley routes 11 and 13 stop at the Darby Transportation Center, and there's a regional rail station in the borough too. Darby is part of the William Penn School District. Few towns in Delco have this much history packed into this little space, and the homes tell the same story.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an electrician cost in Darby?
It depends on the job. A dead outlet costs far less than a panel replacement or a rewire. Every job starts with a free estimate and there's no trip fee, so you'll know the price before any work starts.
Does my Darby home need a permit for electrical work?
Usually, yes. Darby's Department of Code Enforcement publishes an electrical permit application, and the borough also has rental and resale inspection forms. A.V. Electric partners with a licensed Electrical Contractor and pulls permits on every job.
My Darby basement flooded. Is the electrical safe?
Don't assume so. If water reached the panel, outlets, or anything plugged in, leave the power off and call us. We'll check everything before it gets switched back on. Call (267) 692-2184.
Do you work on Darby rentals and multi unit buildings?
Yes. Duplexes and small buildings often need subpanels, extra capacity, or updated wiring. Call for a free estimate and we'll look at what the building actually needs.
How fast can you get to Darby?
Darby borders Collingdale, so you're about as close as it gets. Call and you'll hear back in about 5 minutes during open hours, 8am to 5pm, seven days a week. We can often get there the same or the next day.
Can you upgrade an old rowhome panel without tearing up the house?
In most cases, yes. Most panel swaps are done in a single day with minimal mess. If rewiring is needed, we work room by room to keep wall damage low.
